Hanging on By My Fingernails

As you can see, messy crafting runs in the family. I went to a scrapbook night with my sister Friday night. This is her work area. She does gorgeous pages! I created about 10 pages and they were all very basic. My theory is get those photos on pages and be done. When my photos are all up to date, I will take more time for each page. I am still set on the goal rather than really enjoying the process. I’ll get there yet. Sis takes her time with each page and really makes them wonderfully.

Time has been even shorter lately than before. Yesterday, we had a long car drive, so I brought my hand piecing and was able to finish another Cross Block (Flowering Snowball). I thought I would able to do more, but I have to face reality. It takes me about 1.5 hours to make each block.

I can’t help but lay all of the blocks out each time I make a new block. Then I play around with them for a bit. I move them around so that no colors are too close to each other. I also try to make sure the backgrounds are duplicated too close to each other.

This time, I realized that having more choices for foregrounds and backgrounds makes me make better choices. I have been trying not to duplicate colors or fabrics in one block.

  1. I love dropping by to see what you’ve been up to. It inspires me to get my arse back into the studio to do more than make hems on curtains or some such mundane simple work!
Hand piecing? You are doing those circle blocks by hand! Oh my! I missed that fact in earlier posts! lol
    Thanks for sharing your projects!

  2. It’s starting to look really nice. I hadn’t realized you’re sewing these by hand! Wow. I’m impressed.

As for scrapbooking. My DIL does it and they’re cute. I just took all my photos OUT of albums and put them in photo boxes. Seems to fit our style of looking at them better, and I’m always wanting to organize different groups of them together, not necessarily chronologically but by Halloween over the years or all the kids at the same age or something like that. I like the idea of scrapbooking but don’t want to put my photos in scrapbooks. I’m thinking of doing some scrapbooks with my mementos though. Like all the little bits and pieces from our trip to the UK last year.

  3. Sherry: I am so glad to have you stop by and hope I am providing you with inspiration. I wanted a hand piecing project and was enamoured with the Cross Block (Flowering Snowball). I don’t think the piecing would have come out as well if I had done it on the machine. It is really not very difficult to do the piecing by hand. It does take time, though.

  4. Laume: I think it is very important to use your photos the way you want to use them. I don’t think scrapbooks are for everyone. For me, I need my photos in order. I like them, mostly, in chronological order. I have seen albums that are organized like you describe: all Halloween, all quilts, etc. I think this is a great way to organize photos, because it really shows how things change. The thing that is good about albums is that you can write the stories in them to go along with the pictures. The stories are really important and will be very valuable to your children and grandchildren.
