Cookies in the Tarts?

quilted cookies

SherriD has been encouraging me to include some cookies in the Tarts. I have a bunch of good reasons why I can’t or won’t. Mostly, I haven’t been successful at drawing them so viewers know they are a cookie. Of course, SherriD, resourceful quiltmaker that she is, found this quilt. I am sticking to my guns, but you can weigh in with your opinion below.

  1. Hmmmm. These look like cookies because of the chocolate chip cookies, and the clever lettering on what is supposed to be the shortbread cookie, and because they are all grouped together. I’m not sure some of them would be instantly recognizable as cookies were they to appear on their own.

I disagree that you should add cookies to your Tarts. Rather strongly, do I disagree. I don’t see it as adding anything to your already wonderful design. So why would you?

There is a very, very strong coffee/tea theme to your quilt. And while cookies go well with coffee/tea, they aren’t the first thing that comes to one’s mind. If the lurkers and onlookers don’t believe me, go into a Dunkin Donuts sometime. Very rarely do they sell cookies, or put them on their menu. Or go into a restaurant, end your meal with a steaming cup of Joe and glance at the desserts to pair with it, and you won’t find cookies.

Save the cookies for another quilt. That’s my two cents.

  2. roflmao, I SAID I wasn’t pressuring you on adding cookies. lol I think you had said you hadn’t seen any fabric ones that LOOKED like cookies. I was just helpin’ 😀

And with or without cookies, your tarts are marvelous m’dear. 😀

    hugs

  3. No cookies. Although I AM a fan of cookies with my tea, I don’t think they are a good design element for this quilt. Everything else in the Tarts is done in profile; I think it would be difficult to do cookies in profile, and I don’t think it makes sense to change perspective for one element out of all of them. And I agree with Beena — those cookies look like cookies in context. In the Tarts they would look like coasters!

  4. Thanks everyone for your comments. I will have some new photos of the Tarts to post in the next day or two. No cookies. TFQ articulated the whole profile problem very well, which is the main reason. I also don’t want to get too much away from the strong tea/coffee theme as Beena mentions. SherriD is ever helpful and I do appreciate you seeking a very successful cookie quilt!
