Finished: Fabric of the Year 2012

Finished: Fabric of the Year 2012
Finished: Fabric of the Year 2012

I am really excited about this finish! I think it looks really good. I keep looking at the center red/orange/pink shape in the middle and wondering if it is the upside down tip of Italy. No heel on the boot, so probably no hidden messages. 😉

I am pleased that I remembered to put the darker patches on the bottom this year.

You might be wondering why I am so thrilled that a two year old project is finally finished. You are probably wondering why it takes so longer for me to finish these FOTY quilts. I don’t quilt quilts of this size myself and my quilter was going through some personal struggles, so she wasn’t as fast as she normally is. She is back on the saddle, so if I piece FOTY 2013, she can probably get it done in a few months. I need to do my part.

I am thrilled that it is done, because, hey DONE is DONE-Finished-Finito-complete! It means one less UFO/WIP. Who wouldn’t be excited about fewer WIPs?

FOTY 2012 Back
FOTY 2012 Back

DH was my quilt holder of the evening and as he was getting in position, he noticed the back and actually commented on the Philip Jacobs fabric I used for the back. I used it as an opportunity to expound upon the virtues of Philip Jacobs’ design prowess. My own personal audience. 😉

And, did I say: another finish?!? Hooray!

  1. Congratulations! I love it! I guess I hadn’t realized that there were rectangles and squares mixed, and I think it is so cool how each piece is quilted separately.

I keep thinking I see something like a face, but I can’t quite figure out what my brain is trying to see.

    1. That was particularly clever on my part, though I didn’t know it at the time and it was a pain to piece. I really like the way my quilter did the quilting. She is a master.

  2. It’s fabulous. Once I move the shelves out of the living room there will be a space just the right size…. 🙂 You’d better not leave it where I can get to it next time I visit!

    1. Well, let me know when you move those shelves. 😉

I’ll be happy to loan it to you, but I am going to put it up on my wall for awhile first.

  3. Wonderful! It came out so good, I can see why you are happy with it. Seeing them all together with story and background is a great idea. For starters maybe a website or blog page? That would also give a venue a place to check them out to see and decide if it would fit their space. It is gallery or exhibit worthy for sure:-)

  4. I’m drooling over this quilt – so amazingly gorgeous! (I guess you can tell I like it.)
I hope you are going to submit it to a quilt show or two?

  5. Hello! I am SO happy I found this! I saw your quilt pinned on pinterest but when you click it, it went to some random site that wasn’t yours. I had to do some digging and am so happy you put your site name and date on the corner of your photos, that really helped me find this. Well I am a beginning quilter and I love what you did here. Lovely and just so inspiring. Can i ask you how you actually pieced this? I love how it goes from one color to the next. Is there a technique you followed or can you point me to a tutorial of some sort? Does this technique have a name? I have just done blocks and then put them together but this looks like one big block. To get the colors all fading together did you lay them out as a whole and then just piece a couple at a time working in rows or…? can you tell I am a newbie quilter 😉 Anyway, love your work, any tips or words of wisdom would be so wonderful, sorry for all the questions. 🙂 Thanks! jamie

    1. Hi Jamie,
Thank you so much for reading and for commenting. I appreciate your kind words about my quilt. The Fabric of the Year quilts are an annual project I do, which you can read about here: https://www.artquiltmaker.com/blog/quilts-2/series-quilts/fabric-of-the-year-quilts/

Sadly, I do not know of a tutorial for these quilts. The piecing is just basic piecing. The hard part is arranging the fabrics and that is just work. I get better at it every year.

They are something that I started and I just work at during the beginning of the year. You can see more of my process here: https://www.artquiltmaker.com/blog/tag/foty/. There are tons of posts about working through the process of making each quilt.

Hope this is helpful and feel free to put this link: https://www.artquiltmaker.com/blog/quilts-2/quilts-2014/fabric-of-the-year-2012/ on the original Pinterest board you started at.
