More on Under the Sea

I have been working on Under the Sea pretty steadily in the evenings. It is soothing to do the handwork. I am also surprised at how quickly I can fill up an area with embroidery.

As I said a few days ago, I am pleased with the work. I am still pleased despite some design challenges.

  • I want the embroidery to be simple, so that limits the stitches.
  • I don’t have enough colors, but when will I have enough colors? This should not come as a surprise to anyone who reads regularly.
  • The browns, rusts and golds are not my favorite, but I am finding that I don’t dislike them enough to toss the project.
  • Beads or no beads?

I have been pretty tired or working on other things the past two nights, but I’ll get back to this soon.

  1. It’s a nice warm palette so far. I might add a cooler teal and/or a bluer peacock for some color contrast, and some cream, maybe ivory, possibly a tiny bit of beige, and a pale tint of teal for value contrast. I find I like clear colors, not muddied up with black or gray much usually and this is cozy that way. I do prefer reds, aquas, blues, bluer greens generally and maybe a tiny bit of buttery yellow. I don’t think they would go with this palette though. My daughter likes neutrals with orange (ewwww!!!) and (drabber) greens. When she was 3 yrs. old we lived in a home she called “pukey gold”. It kind of had that ick factor, I guess, looking like someone vomited on it (maybe a touch of drab yellowish-green added). In the early 1990’s beige was still the dominant color in some people’s decor. While taking one of my children around selling for an organization fundraiser, a door opened to show us a home that was covered in beige inside and out. It was so overwhelming to me, that I found I wanted to run as fast as I could away from it. Seldom has a color (or lack of color) had such a profound effect on me, but that did very much so in the most negative way. I do like a good accented neutral, which is one great pop of color (mine would be a dark red or turquoise (teal?), or maybe both). I also like yellow and blue together, but I don’t know if that would work with these colors. Same goes for purples and greens. I’m curious to see what you end up doing.

    1. I just got some jade green and scarlet that I plan to use on this piece to see if it sparks something in me. I love your ideas.

Two rooms of my house are still the life sucking beige they were when we moved in and I am getting very close to painting them myself. It will be a lot of work especially since one is my workroom. However, they are the two rooms in which I spend a lot of time, so the work will be worth it.
